Not that you think I did the trip just for fun, beach and culture. This is the reason why I was there. Being in the middle of round 6 of this years FIA World Rallye Championship.
This one was taken on Monte Lerno, near Buddusò high up in the mountains of Sardegna at the end of day 2.
This one was taken at then end of our additional day. Before the Rallye action got us, we had a day off to enjoy culture (visiting a vinery) and beach fun. Before we went up the mountains to get to Friday’s first stage, we had dinner in Marina di Bosa. The photo was taken when leaving Bosa later on.
Last weekend was the time of the year again. The annual trip to a FIA World Rallye Championship run in outdoor and road trip style. After a few years of driving to the German round around the city of Trier it was not enough and we spread our wings and flew to the toughest round of the year, the Acropolis Rallye of Greece. Since two years, the so called “Rallye of Gods” is unfortunately not part of the WRC calendar anymore and we switched to the mediterranean island of Sardegna in 2014. And so we did this year.
And this is how an aviation nerd starts documenting a trip. AZ407 from Frankfurt to Rome as we descent into Fiumicino Airport.
Thanks Alitalia! Monte Lerno flyover with famous Mickey’s Jump on my flight from Cagliari to Milan. Home for two days on the Rallye weekend. Perfect way to say goodbye to 2014’s Rally di Italia Sardegna.

After finishing Sunday’s Tergu-Osilo stage it was time for some beach fun and washing all the dust off the body. The stage is located on Sardegna’s noth coast, the plane next day would leave from Cagliari, located on the south coast. To save time the other day, I went the half way down on Sunday and ended up on the famous white “rice grain” beaches on Sinis peninsula near Oristano. Nice place! Feels like Baltic Sea. Okay, “rice corn” sand is different to the sand at the Baltic Sea, but the perfect light blue water compensates this. Behind the dunes is nothing but a small and nice restaurant. Nothin else, pure nature. Didn’t expect this at the Mediterranean Sea. Perfect end of a great weekend.

The rising morning sun seen from my sleeping spot on Monte Lerno. I think this was the highest point on this stage, which, was probably the longest stage of the 2014 WRC season calendar with an total length of 59,13km. I slept directly at the pass, a few hundred meters behind famous Micky’s Jump.
The photo shows the marvelous view over the first 30 kilometers of the tage. I never had such a view before. You could see the dust rising from several cars on the stage at the same time and they still needed minutes to reach this spot. Beside having those 3 great spots for doing the photos showed earlier, I also had a view to Micky’s Jump after only a 200m walk through the fields.
This view was a perfect beginning for a day full of rallye action. And imagine: while having this view, I had a breakfast like this one.

If you were ever wondering what do we do all the time waiting for 2 hours of action on the stages? Having fun! Playing around with the photo gear for example. This one was taken on the last night of the rallye. Same corner as on the last pic. Unfortunately almost at sea level, so the night sky wasn’t that clear as in the nights up in the mountains the other night. Anyway, I’m happy with what I got.
