Newport Beach
As alway on my business trips: leave the office, check the light conditions and drive to a spot already discovered on Google. This time I drove to Newport and threw my stuff on the beach and watched the scene relaxing in the sun and figuring out where to catch some nice shots. This is what I got when I was walking around in the streets near the beach.
Down South
First thing after landing at LAX: Get the rental car and drive down the 405 to Orange County. I really like it. Because it is in golden afternoon light with the sun in your back and you pass road signs with all these names you only know from all the Hollywood blockbusters you have seen.
Grand Canyon
It seems as the “Non-Travel-Photo-Period” lasted for two pictures only. Sorry for that!
Even if it looks like, I did not travel to Mars aboard a Boeing 747 for photographing one of its various canyons. This photo was taken 30.000 feet above the state of Arizona while flying over the Grand Canyon. Since this pass I’m deeply impressed by its size and I now know why it is called Grand Canyon. The flight over the Canyon took around 40 minutes. Absolutely breathtaking. I think I have to go back, hire a car and watch it from the ground – and take pictures!
Big Blue Whale
I mentioned in the last post, there was this Korean A380 departing right over my head. As you know, this is kind of a photoblog and mostly I carry a camera with me: for sure I have captured this scene as well. Moving slowly over the beach, like pinned in the air.
Delta heavy
One of the first things which came into to my mind when I got the information about traveling to California was: Hell yeah – spotting at LAX! Propably it was recognizable in ealier posts, I really like aviation and flying is always a pleasure for me. And due to this I have seen a lot pictures made at Los Angeles International Airport. A special thing there is a small park next to the In’n’Out-Burger at Sepulveda Blvd. This is one of the rare spots in the world where it is possible to make plane photographs using a wide angle lens as the aircraft are passing really low over this point. The plan was to grap the rental car and go there. Unfortunately it was right after noon and no heavy was in sight. And all the 737 and A32X were not that impressive.
Second attempt was on the day I had to leave back home. As I was not alone in the car I could not go to the airport in the early morning to catch all the A380 and B747 from Asia and Australia. At the end – this Delta 767 you see on the photo is the biggest bird I got. Not that what I had planned to shoot but better than nothing. Anyway, I assume there is no airport in the near were I can make a better wide angle picture due to the fact that the birds are to high when crossing the airport fence. What should I say, I had the chance to spot aircraft at LAX and I took it. And it was quite impressive. Especially a few minutes later when I went to the beach behind the airport for the final time and this big blue Korean A380 got airborne right above me. Incredible piece of engineering.
Sunset Jogging
Another photo taken on the Pacific coastline in February this year. I took the picture on the last evening I was in California. I finished all my work in the afternoon and took the opportunity to spend the rest of the day in the Crystal Cove State Park near Laguna Beach. I don’t know exactly how many photos I did – but my whole hard disk is full with sunset pictures taken there. Anyway, sitting in the sand at 25°C (especially in a week with -25°C in central Europe) and staring mesmerised when this big orange ball disappeared in the ocean was breathtaking.
And on this particular photo I really like the jogger crossing the frame. This adds a special note to the picture.
